AmeriCares volunteers assemble emergency kits on Giving Tuesday

Volunteers assembled 500 family emergency kits at AmeriCares headquarters on Tuesday, Dec. 1, as part of the emergency response and global health organization’s #GivingHealth on #GivingTuesday campaign.

The tote-bag kits contain essential personal care items for a family of four, including soap, shampoo, toothbrushes and towels. The kits are pre-positioned in AmeriCares Stamford, Conn., warehouse for distribution to families across the United States displaced by tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding and other emergencies. AmeriCares responds to an average of 30 emergencies worldwide every year, establishes long-term recovery projects and brings disaster preparedness programs to vulnerable communities.

“Giving Tuesday is a great way to start the holiday season,” said AmeriCares President and CEO Michael J. Nyenhuis. “We see it as an opportunity to organize hands-on events, where supporters can roll up their sleeves and help us prepare for the next emergency.”

#GivingTuesday was created in 2012 to kick off the charitable giving season, much like Black Friday and Cyber Monday start the holiday shopping season. The annual event, now in its fourth year, is a global movement that harnesses the power of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities. #GivingTuesday is always the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
