Parisi named assistant superintendent

Superintendent of Schools Dr. William McKersie has announced the appointment of Irene Parisi as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Learning, effective Nov. 19.

Ms. Parisi is currently the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the East Windsor Public Schools (EWPS) in East Windsor. An educator for twelve years, Ms. Parisi is leading the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in the East Windsor schools and is developing assessments aligned to East Winsdor’s CCSS curriculum units. She has led technology integration with special attention to the implementation of digital learning with mobile devices. Additionally, she has a strong background in curriculum development, instructional strategies and professional learning as a classroom teacher and literacy coach.

“We are excited to welcome a superbly talented education leader to the central office team. Mrs. Parisi has rapidly proven herself as a passionate, knowledgeable and adept leader, and is an expert in Common Core State Standards, digital learning, and curriculum and instruction. Mrs. Parisi is devoted to academic excellence and supporting students and teachers to perform at the highest levels. We look forward to welcoming her to the Greenwich community in November,” Dr. McKersie said.

“During the site visit it was abundantly clear that Irene is an educator whose dedication and expertise has had a significant impact on the students, families and staff she serves,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Ellen Flanagan. “Administrators and teachers alike spoke of Irene’s ability to take complex issues and make them accessible to every teacher and classroom in meaningful ways. Students and parents related their personal experiences with Irene as an advocate for students and a visionary for the district.”

Ms. Parisi began her career in teaching in 2000 at Casimar Pulaski Elementary School in Meriden as a third grade classroom teacher and subsequently as a fifth grade teacher. In 2008, she became the literacy coach for East Windsor Middle School in Broad Brook.

In 2011, Ms. Parisi was named an Apple Distinguished Administrator for her work in the integration of Apple products in the schools. Much of her work with the Common Core and technology integration has been seen as a model in the state. She was asked to deliver a keynote address for secondary teachers in the North Haven Public Schools at the start of the current school year, and many districts have traveled to East Windsor to discuss the transition and implementation work in these areas.

In addition to teaching, Ms. Parisi is a published author, including the book How to Manage an Independent Reading Program. She is an active participant at the East Windsor PTO meetings, attending and presenting regularly, and is experienced in board relations, having reinstated the East Windsor Board’s Curriculum Council.

Ms. Parisi received a B.A. in music and sound recording, and music business in 1995, and a Masters of Science in education in 2007 from the University of New Haven. She received a Sixth Year Degree in educational leadership from Central Connecticut State University in May 2010.
