Winter walk at Mianus River Gorge, Sunday, Dec. 6

Following a fall walking tour of Mianus River Gorge’s 73-acre Levene property acquisition, Executive Director Rod Christie invites the public on a winter walking tour when views are best of the Levene property and adjacent ridge along the Castlebrook property Sunday, Dec. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meeting location to be announced depending on weather.

MianusRiverFrozensunsetfullThe Mianus River Gorge Preserve trails will be closed by this time, so this is an invitation-only private tour of these protected lands. Protecting these lands is important for the community and for the environment as a corridor for wildlife, a link to Gorge lands from both north-south and east-west, and to protect the area’s drinking water supply.

MianusRiverreflectionleavesThe tour will include some tracking for evidence of bobcats, coyotes and other wildlife and explore the winter natural history. Participants will see evidence of Native American and colonial occupation that tells the history of this property as well as other unique ecological features that make these important additions to the Mianus River Gorge Preserve.

Please come prepared to hike, including one moderately steep climb. The walking tour provides a unique glimpse into this property that presently is only open by private tour. Meeting place will be announced depending on weather / parking availability.

Mianus River Gorge, located in Bedford, NY, works to protect and promote appreciation of the natural heritage of the Mianus River watershed through land acquisition, conservation science, research, and education throughout the region.
