Locals join Team BCured

To help the fight against cancer, Riverside resident Peter Bailey and Greenwich’s Christina Vitale aren’t just willing to talk the walk. They’re willing to walk the walk or, to be more accurate run it.

They will be part of a team of athletes that will be running the ING New York City Marathon on Nov. 4 to raise funds for brain cancer research. Mr. Bailey and Ms. Vitale are a part of Team BCured with Gareth Evans, Blake Stevens of Wilton, Magnus Tangen of Rowayton and Bo Koch.

Mr. Bailey lost his mother-in-law to brain cancer in 2006 and said he is deeply committed to raising awareness about this devastating disease.

BCured builds awareness about brain cancer and funds research to develop a cure. Since it’s launch in 2008, BCured has awarded five grants to research doctors at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University, Yale University, and Massachusetts General Hospital. Nearly 550 people in the US are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor every day. There are no known causes for brain cancer and research is drastically underfunded.

This year’s Team BCured has already raised more than $27,000 and has set a goal to raise $125,000. The team is supported by BCured through newsletters, training tips, team gear and enthusiastic encouragement at BCured’s race day Cheer Zone.
