Star Wars Week Dec. 12-19

In anticipation of the Star Wars: Episode VII movie release on Friday, December 18, Greenwich Library will celebrate the iconic series with events for children and teens from Saturday, December 12 through 19.

Celebrate Star Wars: Crafts, games, fun!  Saturday, December 12 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Do you feel the Force? Try out the games in our “Jedi Academy”. Make Star Wars crafts including droid ornaments and a lightsaber to test your skills. Costumes welcome! Call Children’s Services for more information at 203-622-7940 

Robot Battle! LEGO Mindstorms NXT, Saturday, December 12 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Prepare for battle! Children can help build and program LEGO Mindstorms NXT robots to battle in the meeting room arena. All equipment provided. Grades 3-6 only. Required registration begins 12/1.  Call Children’s Services for more information at 203-622-7940

Gaming Day – Star Wars Edition, Saturday, December 19 from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Come to the Library Meeting Room for Jedi-themed video games, board games and LEGOS for all ages. Snacks and refreshments will be served.  Call Everett Perdue for more information at 203-625-6507.

Petite Concert, Registration details for Storytimes and 3D printing Workshop

Children’s Services has many exciting programs planned for the holiday season and New Year.  Music loving families can enjoy two special events, a live presentation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and an interactive violin performance by Petite Concerts.

Families are encouraged to take part in the Library’s regularly scheduled reading programs including Book Clubs, Story Crafts, Bilingual Storytime, Sing, Play and Move and more. Programs are open to all without registration or charge unless otherwise indicated.

Saturday, December 5 at 2 p.m., The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Friends of Greenwich Library will present a live Theatreworks USA production of this classic tale of four children who accidentally enter the land of Narnia by climbing through a magic wardrobe. This 60-minute musical is appropriate for grades 1-7, and is open to all at no charge. Assigned seating tickets are limited to six per person and will be available at noon at the Cole Auditorium. Saturday, December 12 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Star Wars Week, Children’s Room Events

In anticipation of the new Star Wars: Episode VII movie release on Friday, December 18, Greenwich Library will celebrate the iconic series with events for children and teens from Saturday, December 12 through 19.  Special Children’s Room events on Saturday, December 12 include a LEGO Mindstorms Robot Battle from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. for grades 3-6 (register online beginning 12/1) and four hours of Star Wars themed craft activities for all ages from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Library’s “Jedi Academy”. Costumes welcome!

Tuesday, December 15 at 10:30 a.m., Petite Concert with violinist Chie Yoshinaka

This special children’s program will feature a 30-minute interactive concert for the youngest listeners, from newborns to preschoolers. Petite Concerts contain well known (and very short) musical selections. A five-minute instrument discovery session will be held at the end of the performance.

Children’s Room Preregistered Programs

Patrons may register via phone for Baby Lapsit Winter Session I beginning on Monday, December 14. The January session runs from Thursday, January 14 through Thursday, February 11. Also on December 14, students in grades 4-6 may begin registering for the 3D Printing Workshop taking place on Saturday, January 9.

  • National Master Rich Jackson hosts Friday Night Chess on Friday, December 4 at 7 p.m. All ages and skill levels are welcome.
  • Beyond Bullying, a presentation by Dr. Jonathan Fast will take place on Wednesday, December 9 at 7 p.m. in the Meeting Room.

GREENWICH LIBRARY TEEN PROGRAMS IN DECEMBER

The College Admissions Process, Middle and High School Student Leaders

This month, high school students and their parents can glean some expert advice about the college admissions process before the final application deadlines hit. The Library’s regularly scheduled teen programs, including middle school and high school Student Leadership Council, Friday Night Chess and Middle School Book Club meet monthly and are open to all without registration or charge unless otherwise indicated.

Wednesday, December 2 at 7:15 p.m., Student Leadership Council Meeting – Middle School

This is a newly formed group designed to accommodate enthusiastic student leaders in grades 6-8. Much like Student Leaders for the upper grades, middle school students will meet at Teen Central on the second floor to brainstorm about using library resources to initiate and execute projects relevant to their peer group in exchange for community service hours. Refreshments will be served.

Thursday, December 3 at 7 p.m., Student Leadership Council Meeting – Teens

Students in grades 8-12 gather at Teen Central on the second floor to brainstorm about using library resources to initiate and execute projects relevant to their peer group in exchange for community service hours. Refreshments will be served.

Friday, December 4 at 7 p.m., Friday Night Chess

National Master Rich Jackson will provide instruction, supervise play and challenge students to an occasional match. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Bring a love of the game or a desire to learn.

Monday, December 7 at 7 p.m., What Matters in the College Admissions Process

In this program for students and parents, Keith Berman, President of Options for College will cover finding the right match; how colleges admit students; how to get in and get the most out of college; and finally, how to stay calm throughout the entire process. This presentation is open to all at no charge and will be held in the Meeting Room.

Thursday, December 17 at 4:30 p.m., Middle School Book Club

Middle School Book Club is for literature fans in grades 6-8. This month’s title is I Have a Bad Feeling About This by Jeff Strand. In this 2016 Nutmeg Award nominee, 16 year-old Henry Lambert would rather play video games than spend time in the great outdoors, which is why his dad is shipping him off to Strongwoods Survival Camp.  Register for the program and pick up a copy of the book at the 2nd floor reference desk.

Saturday, December 19 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Gaming Day Star Wars Edition

In celebration of the opening of the new Star Wars film, we are hosting a Star Wars themed Gaming Day in the Greenwich Library Meeting Room. There will be Jedi-themed video games, board games and LEGOS available for all ages.

  • Wednesday, December 9 from 7-8:30 p.m., a thought-provoking presentation on bullying by Dr. Jonathan Fast, held in the Meeting Room.
  • Saturday, December 12 through Saturday December 19, Star Wars Week. A week of Star Wars programming for all ages through adults, including crafts, robotics, gaming.
