Greenwich High X-C travels to Wickham for class LLs

The Greenwich High School boys and girls cross-country team traveled upstate to Wickham Park for competition in the CIAC class LL championships.

The GHS boys team finished 15th overall with 448 points. Danbury won the class LL title with 94 points while New Milford High School placed second with 145 points.

The Cardinals were led by junior Mark Jarombek, who was the first GHS athlete to cross the finish line, netting 57th overall and a time of 17:40. Older brother Andrew Jarombek was next to finish, picking up a time of 18:09 that was good enough for 94th overall.

Not far behind was senior Dan Wilbanks, who finished 98th overall with a time of 18:12. The GHS duo of John Sulich, a junior, and freshman Sebastian Oe finished mere inches apart, with Sulich taking 99th place (18:13) and Oe finishing 100th (18:13).

Junior Spencer Helmrich crossed the line 133rd overall with a time of 18:47.

On the girls side, Big Red tied Norwich Free Academy and took 10th overall with 280 points. Ridgefield won the class LL title with 55 points and Glastonbury was close second with 62. Simsbury rounded out the top three with 144 points.

Leading the way for the Lady Cardinals was sophomore Jenny Goggin. Her time of 21:01 was the fastest on the team and was good enough for 22nd overall.

Freshman Sabrina Thurber just missed out on a top 50 finish, netting a 51st place time of 21:49 and was the fifth fastest freshman at the finals.

Senior Kathryn Bernstein finished eight spots behind, taking home a time of 21:58. Teammate Emily Hunt, a sophomore, finished 69th overall (22:10), while fellow sophomore Elaine Harris was 79th overall (22:25). Junior Kana Jitsuno ended her day 86th overall and with a time of 22:39.
