Greenwich Farms Academy round-up featuring Greenwich athletes

Varsity Volleyball

The girls varsity volleyball lost 3-0 in the quarter finals of the FAA Tournament to Greenwich Academy by the scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-19. Senior Allie Carey (Ridgefield) had 15 kills and 4 blocks, eighth grader Meg Nesi (Westport) had 13 assists, and senior Rory Shinnick (Darien) had 13 digs.

The team is seeded fourth in the New England Tournament, which begins for them on Wednesday, Nov. 18, against Miss Hall’s School.

Girls varsity soccer

In the quarterfinal round of the FAA playoffs, Monday, No. 6 The Masters School traveled to play No. 3 Greens Farms Academy. Scoring for GFA were freshman Sophie Staeger (Westport), junior Alexis Messina (Old Greenwich), freshman Ella Murphy (Darien) and two goals from junior Clare Mengel (Fairfield) for a 5-3 GFA win.

Then on Wednesday the girls faced St. Luke’s in the FAA semi-final match up. While GFA dominated the majority of the game, St. Luke’s came away with the 2-0 victory.

Saturday the Lady Dragons ​ played their final game of the regular season against Miss Porters School, walking away with a 1-1 tie. The Dragons scored their goal of the game early in the second half off a long pass from junior Clare Mengel (Fairfield) which eventually found the head of senior captain Erin Reilly (Fairfield) who knocked the ball in goal. Eighth grader Ryan Boyle (Southport) played behind the team in net, coming away with numerous saves.

GFA begins the New England Tournament Wednesday, where they will face Marianapolis Prep.

Boys varsity soccer

The boys’ varsity soccer won twice during the week to capture their first FAA Tournament Championship in many years. GFA defeated Masters 5-2 on Wednesday in the semi-finals, moving on to defeat Rye Country Day School 1-0 in the finals Saturday.

Against Masters, senior Matt Allen (Fairfield) had two goals, senior captain Ben Strait (Stamford) had a goal and an assist, as did senior captain Charlie Mounts (Westport). Fellow senior Stephen Gallagher (Fairfield) added a goal while sophomore Ian Lee (Greenwich) tallied an assist to round off the scoring for GFA. Sophomore goaltender Henry Holzinger (Norwalk) stopped 9 shots.

In Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Rye Country Day School Strait drew a crucial foul with 15 minutes left in a scoreless game. Mounts took the resulting free kick and found senior Matt Allen (Fairfield) for the goal.  Holzinger had 13 saves for the shutout.

Varsity cross country

Saturday the girls and boys varsity cross country teams ran in their final meet at the NEPTSA Division III championship held at the Canterbury School. The boys team finished in 6th place overall with senior Alex McCall (Westport) coming in 6th place at 17:29 and earning himself All-New England honors. The girls finished in 13th place, with Maggie Boudreau (Wilton, 20:48), Carmen Martin (Easton, 20:49), and Madi McCreesh (Fairfield, 20:54) finishing in the top 20 to earn All-New England honors.

Varsity field hockey

GFA field hockey ended their season with a 3-0 loss against Ethel Walker. GFA’s final record was 2-11-2.
