Greenwich public and private schools will be closed at least through Wednesday

UPDATE SUNDAY 4 PM — In news that was largely expected given the severity of the forecast, the Greenwich Public Schools will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Sunday afternoon, Brunswick School Greenwich Academy and the Convent of the Sacred Heart said they would also cancel classes through Wednesday.

In a press release sent out Sunday by Superintendent of Schools William McKersie, he cited the forecast and information he had received from public safety officials at the town’s Emergency Operations Center.

Dr. McKersie said additional info will be sent out through the district’s website at greenwichschools.org, media outlets such as the Post and Parentlink, the district’s mass email and telephone communications system. An update will be sent on Wednesday, October 31st by 2:00PM as to the status of school for the rest of the week.

“As the forecasts are predicting severe wind, rain, flooding, and widespread power outages, it is likely that the schools will be closed for some number of days,” Dr. McKersie said. “We felt it prudent to announce the closing of schools today, while access to communications is still available and so that families can make plans for the care of their school-aged children. While it is impossible to predict how many days may be necessary to close the schools, based on the information we have at this time, we believe that we will need at least until Wednesday to see through the impact of the storm and make decisions about the status of re-opening the schools.”

The impact of Tropical Storm Irene and the March 2010 nor’easter closed Greenwich schools for days due to bus routes not being cleared. Greenwich joins most districts in Fairfield and Westchester Counties in closing schools for at least Monday and Tuesday as a precaution.
