Local theatre company offers improv class to Greenwich seniors

Open Arts Alliance, a professional non-profit theatre company, is excited to partner with The River House Adult Day Center to offer improvisation classes to members.

The class is open to all members of The River House Adult Day Center community and will be a fun, user-friendly and creative way of exploring the wonderful world of improvisation. “Improv” is a centuries-old technique of creating theatre “on the spot” from audience suggestions and without a script. Through fun theatre games and warm-ups, members of the group will learn different improve scenes and techniques in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Open Arts Alliance is a professional non-profit theatre company dedicated to creating, developing and producing plays and musicals that tour health care facilities, schools and community centers. The arts agency strives to make professional theatre accessible to traditionally underserved communities. In OAA’s first season over 1,000 patrons enjoyed performances of their touring productions of “A Christmas Carol” and “The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe” at local adult day centers, rehabilitation facilities and educational community centers.

Rocco Natale, Executive Director of the theatre company, said: “We are excited to pilot this new program at The River House. From the moment we spoke with Lyndsay DeMatteo, The River House’s Director of Therapeutic Recreation, about educational outreach programs- we knew that The River House Adult Day Center was a special place. We immediately wanted to be a part of this vibrant center.” Natale goes on, “as a Greenwich native, I feel honored to serve this community and share the gifts of our artists.” Among the professional teaching artists helming the class will be Amanda Monick and Autumn Howard.

Improv is a great way to express yourself, stretch your creativity and exercise minds and body. Members of The River House Adult Day Center are encouraged to attend one of or many of the class sessions, which meet Fridays in October & November, from 11-noon, at The River House Adult Day Center,125 River Road Extension, Cos Cob.
