Supermarketing for Seniors celebrates Grandparents Day

Jewish Family Services of Greenwich (JFS) presents Supermarketing for Seniors Celebrates Grandparents Day event on Sunday, September 20. In partnership with neighborhood supermarkets, including A&P, Kings, Stop & Shop, and Balducci’s, as well as with The Senior Center of Greenwich, JFS representatives and volunteers will be stationed across the community to raise awareness and funding for our Supermarketing for Seniors program, a nondenominational free grocery shopping and case management service designed to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of housebound Greenwich citizen 60 years of age or older.

Supermarketing for Seniors has served our elderly neighbors of Greenwich since 1986, and currently the program provides shopping and support services to 180 seniors each year. Although there are no income requirements to participate in our program, 90% of the seniors for whom we shop are considered low income by Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) guidelines, and many do not have other support systems in their lives to visit and monitor them on a regular basis. Over the course of a year, JFS hears the following quote dozens of times, “I don’t know what I would do without Supermarketing for Seniors; you are so important for my life.”

On Sunday, September 20, we are inviting all community members to visit our Supermarketing for Seniors Celebrates Grandparents Day booths anytime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. At each booth, community members can show their support for our program. A donation of just $20 will support a week’s worth of shopping for a senior. All of our stations will have program information, free balloons and postcards that individuals can send to a senior in their own life to wish them a happy Grandparents Day. Finally, we will be giving away our first annual SHOPPER OF THE YEAR AWARD to the shopper who exemplifies the values of the program in front of The Senior Center at noon.

The locations of our booths will include:

• A&P in Central Greenwich, 160 West Putnam

• A&P in Riverside, 1261 East Putnam Avenue

• Balducci’s in Riverside, 1050 East Putnam Avenue

• Kings in Old Greenwich, 26 Arcadia Road

• Stop & Shop in Central Greenwich, 161 West Putnam Avenue

• The Senior Center , 299 Greenwich Avenue
