A view from the Greenwich WGCH press box

Editor’s Note: Each week during the high school football season, the radio crew from WGCH 1490 AM in Greenwich will have a column about the high school sports scene online at Greenwich-post.com. The views expressed in the column are that of the individual composing the column:

All is going quite well now for the Greenwich Cardinals. The Big Red football team is floating along nicely, thank you very much. Following a 56-6 win* over Bridgeport Central, the team is 5-0.

*Excuse me for interrupting, but my math skills are pretty good. Isn’t fifty-six minus six…fifty? Isn’t there a rule in Connecticut, brought to you by the CIAC (the sweetest-smelling athletic commission) called, colloquially, “The 50-point rule?” Ergo (big words) 56-6 is a fifty-point win. Nope…it has to be OVER fifty points. Then shouldn’t it be called “The 51-point rule?” Wow. They can’t even get that right.

So we’re well on our way to the predestined goal of Greenwich versus Staples in the 2012 FCIAC Championship game. Except someone is throwing a wrench into the whole thing: Trinity Catholic.

If you haven’t looked (and I’m quite sure you have), the Crusaders have also been perfect. They are 6-0 (remember, Greenwich had a bye week) and play Bassick this weekend. Now no disrespect intended but while the Lions have improved, these Crusaders won’t exactly be thrown to them. So now Trinity Catholic will be 7-0. They have the points in their favor.

Let’s examine the competitors…

— Greenwich: Plays Westhill, McMahon, Danbury, and Staples. You have to like the Cardinals’ chances in all three of these games (the competitors for the conference championship will be determined before the Staples). Each team deserves respect, especially the vastly-improved Westhill.

— Staples: Plays Darien, Fairfield Warde, and Westhill. Darien got a big cog back in Peter Gesualdi, but is it enough to knock the mighty Wreckers off? I guess anything is possible.

— Trinity Catholic: Plays Bassick, Darien, St. Joseph, and Wilton. Hmmm…well, there they are. It will take either Darien or St. Joe’s to keep things on par for the Greenwich/Staples showdown.

Now, I didn’t bring my abacus with me to figure the points out, but being the fairly bright fellow that I am, I can figure out that the first one to lose is out of the conference championship. But Greenwich needs help due to their soft schedule. Bottom line? They need to win, and somebody else needs to lose. If it is Trinity Catholic and Staples, they’ll meet in Trumbull on Nov. 16. If it is Greenwich and Staples…well…they’re scheduled to play on Thanksgiving, but that could change.

We’ve still got a lot of football to be played.
