Fairfield County’s Community Foundation awards The Center $10K grant

Fairfield County’s Community Foundation has granted The Center for Sexual Assault Crisis Counseling & Education (The Center) $10,000 to help fuel its Girls Circle Program.

Girls Circle, a strengths-based support group addressing the unique needs of girls ages 9-18 is designed to increase positive connections, personal and collective strengths, and competence in girls. These groups are a key component of linking our counseling and education programs together – through understanding the needs of girls, paired with education, girls are more likely to connect with each other and gain the skills necessary to succeed in life.

This is the third year that Fairfield County’s Community Foundation has funded The Center’s Girls Circle program, and with excellent results. With the new round of support, The Center plans to train two additional facilitators in the Girls Circle model and establish groups in Middle and/or High Schools in Stamford, Greenwich and Norwalk.

An important and recent addition to The Center’s Girls Circle program are Bilingual groups at Cloonan Middle School and Norwalk High School. “There is a lack of Spanish speaking and culturally competent services for girls whose first language is Spanish and/or who identify as Latina.” commented Setta Mushegian, The Center’s Director of Crisis Counseling and Advocacy. “The Center’s Bilingual groups help to fill this service gap in Lower Fairfield County.”

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Fairfield County’s Community Foundation around our shared goal of helping Fairfield County women and girls reach their full potential,” commented Mushegian. “The Center’s team has seen exciting gains made by the girls who participate in Girls Circle, and we look forward to the upcoming school year.”
