5K run added to annual Heart Walk event

The Fairfield Region American Heart Association’s annual Heart Walk event is adding a 5K-run to their Oct. 25 event. Now runners and walkers alike can join the Fairfield County Heart Walk & Run event to support the fight against heart disease and stroke.

“We’re happy to offer this new element to the Heart Walk event in Westport. Whether you walk, stroll or run, you’ll be helping a vital organization in our community, and your own heart!” said Bob Conklin, volunteer chairperson of the event.

Conklin will serve as the volunteer Chairperson of the Fairfield County Heart Walk & Run event, set for Sunday, Oct. 25, at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. The Heart Walk is the AHA’s biggest regional event with nearly 1,000 participants walking to support AHA programs and research. All pre-registered 5K runners will be offered official times. The run is sanctioned by USA Track and Field (USATF). Registration for runners is $35 which will benefit the American Heart Association.

The Heart Walk & Run is part of the AHA’s year-round program to help community members and employees get healthier. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in the U.S., and physical inactivity doubles the risk. The good news is that more than 80% of heart disease can be prevented by making simple lifestyle changes like eating healthier, quitting smoking and walking at least 30 minutes per day on most days of the week.

Walkers and runners may register online at www.fairfieldcountyheartwalk.org. Companies interested in supporting the Heart Walk with sponsorship or teams should contact Kevin Byrne at [email protected] or by calling 914-640-3262.

The Heart Walk is sponsored nationally by Subway, and locally by Signature Sponsor, Stamford Hospital; Regional Chain of Survivor Sponsor, Westchester Medical Center Hospital; Frontier Communications; PwC; Stop & Shop; and Media Sponsors 95.9 Fox Radio and the Hour Newspaper.
