New poll shows strong trust for Planned Parenthood

Nearly 100 organizations issue letter of support of Planned Parenthood to U.S. Senate and House leadership.

A new national poll shows strong support and trust in Planned Parenthood in the wake of outrageous political attacks from anti-abortion extremists. The poll also demonstrates overwhelming opposition to proposals to end all federal funding for preventive care services like cancer screenings and family planning at Planned Parenthood health centers across the country.

“This poll shows much of what we already knew: that defunding Planned Parenthood is a losing proposition not just for the millions of men and women who come through the doors of Planned Parenthood every year, but also with people who do not want to see their politicians focused on restricting lifesaving care,” said Judy Tabar President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England. “Planned Parenthood is America’s most trusted reproductive health care provider. One in five women has relied on Planned Parenthood for care in her lifetime. Every year, 2.7 million women, men, and young people turn to Planned Parenthood for basic, high-quality, preventive care — lifesaving cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, birth control and well-woman exams.”

Among the poll’s key findings, there is significant opposition to proposals to defund Planned Parenthood. Survey respondents overwhelmingly disagree with those who say there should be an immediate vote to end all government funding for Planned Parenthood in light of undercover videos. The poll also finds that the Congressional investigations into Planned Parenthood are largely motivated by politics, and doubt their impartiality. Finally, by a large margin, voters trust Planned Parenthood rather than the group of extremists with regard to the videos and Planned Parenthood’s practices on fetal tissue donation. The national survey was conducted by Hart Research Associates on behalf of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund among a national cross section of 800 registered voters.

“Americans continue to support funding for Planned Parenthood despite the debate engendered by the release of these videos,” said Geoff Garin, President of Hart Research Associates. “Voters respond favorably to Planned Parenthood’s core message about the videos and its policies with regard to fetal tissue donations. The renewed attacks on Planned Parenthood are likely to become a substantial political liability for Republicans, especially among women, because the GOP’s support for defunding Planned Parenthood is deeply at odds with the position of swing voters.”

Of Planned Parenthood’s 2.7 million patients, 78% live with incomes of 150% of the federal poverty level or less. As politicians threaten to defund Planned Parenthood, 92 leading organizations signed a letter to U.S. Senate and House leaders urging support for the 99-year-old non-profit health care provider. The organizations signing the letter work closely with Planned Parenthood and know of its dedication to assisting patients and advocating for women throughout the country.

Support runs deep for Planned Parenthood, with allies such as the American Public Health Association, the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees, Service Employees International Union, the Black Women’s Health Imperative, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Women’s Law Center among the organizations that signed the letter. The letter can be viewed in its entirety here.

“We are sincerely grateful to the nearly 100 renowned organizations that are showing support for Planned Parenthood. Many of us work on behalf of those who rely on Planned Parenthood for compassionate, high quality care and know how important it is that it continues to be available to those who need it,” Tabar said. “We know the extremists behind these videos do not have credibility with the American people, and neither do the politicians behind these political attacks against women’s health and the care provided by Planned Parenthood. Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our patients, which is why we are fighting back and calling this attack campaign what it is – part of a decade-long campaign of deceiving the public, making false charges, and terrorizing women and their doctors, all in order to ban abortion and cut women off from care at Planned Parenthood.”
