Indian Harbor hosts Ideal 18 U.S. Championships

Under gray skies with light and variable conditions, the 2012 Ideal 18 North American Championship commenced on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Greenwich’s Indian Harbor Yacht Club.

In the competition were a fleet of 41 boats hailing from 10 Clubs – Rochester Yacht Club, Pequot Yacht Club, Norwalk Yacht Club, Stamford Yacht Club, Old Greenwich Yacht Club, Riverside Yacht Club, Indian Harbor Yacht Club, Belle Haven Club, Larchmont Yacht Club and Centerport Yacht Club.

Anticipating wind shifts and getting in phase were critical to success on a very challenging day. The IHYC Race Committee did a fine job with course management, particularly managing and monitoring a very busy starting line, while getting off four races.

The fun and camaraderie continued into the evening with a great party thrown by host Indian Harbor Yacht Club.

On Sunday, initial concern about a lack of wind and possible cancellation of races gave way to clearing skies and a modest wind of three to five knots, again out of the northwest. With 30 degree shifts and variable conditions, the Indian Harbor Race Committee again did a fine job and managed to orchestrate four races. With occasional gusts up to 10 knots, course tactics again played a key role.

Experience, skill and judgment shown through, with three boats separating themselves from the rest of the fleet. Danny Pletsch and Lincoln White (Larchmont) took first place with 17 points, while John Bainton and Gregg Delany (Belle Haven Club) took the silver with 21 points. Brad Neuberth and Pace Ralli (Riverside) took third with 24 points.

Indian Harbor’s Jamie Cummiskey and his son Jay came in fourth with 57 points and Steve Schmidt and Karen Lau finished fifth overall with 62 points.

Racers are already looking ahead to next year’s Ideal 18 Inter-Club Championship hosted by Indian Harbor Yacht Club and to the 2014 North Americans.
