O'Neil, Greenwich High football pounds Falcons, 40-14

With senior quarterback Liam O’Neil under center for the first time this season, the Greenwich High School football team steamrolled past Fairfield Ludlowe High School 40-14 last night at Taft Field.

Coming back from a fractured finger that sidelined O’Neil midway through the preseason, the GHS quarterback looked solid in his return to action, throwing for two touchdowns and finishing up with 147 passing yards.

“It felt so great to be back and it was really killing me not being on the field,” O’Neil said. “I thought Ludlowe had a really great game plan, but our receivers were open and I was happy with the way we played tonight.”

Although the Falcons had possession of the ball throughout much of the game, Greenwich was able to capitalize when they had the chance.

Greenwich senior Alex McMurray ran for three touchdowns, while senior Vincent Ferraro caught one touchdown reception and fellow senior Joe Kelly added another. On special teams, Austin Longi grabbed the punt return at the Greenwich 1 and sprinted past the Fairfield defense 99 yards for the touchdown.

Defensively, the duo of Taylor Olmstead and Mark Bernstein were able to net an interception apiece.

With the victory, Greenwich improves to 4-0 on the season and will be back home Saturday afternoon for Homecoming against Bridgeport Central.
