Pippa Leigh, Miss Hockanum Valley 2015, competed for the title of Miss Connecticut June 26 and 27 at the Mohegan Sun Cabaret Theater.

The 17-year-old Greenwich resident was the youngest competitor this year vying for the title. She walked away with the Miss America Organization’s Academic Award and the Miss Connecticut Scholarship Pageant’s Community Service Award and Non-Finalist Talent Award. She also graced northern CT wearing couture dresses by Greenwich designer Katie Fong for her all of the outside appearances during pageant week. Although she felt ready to take the Miss Connecticut title, her current title Miss Hockanum Valley will afford her more freedom to work on her personal platforms.

She spoke with State representatives during pageant week and stressed the importance of advocating for her platform, “Think Before You Post; Social Media Safety.” Senator Richard Blumenthal, a strong supporter of the Miss America Organization, was very impressed with her platform and would like to encourage it from his level. She would like to bring her platform to elementary school children that if you don’t want to see it on a billboard, don’t post it online. She is currently writing and publishing a children’s book that she will share with schools during her visits.

Besides social media safety, she will work with the Connecticut Veterans and the Westport VFW ladies auxiliary encouraging high school students to compete for the large scholarships the VFW offers in its Voice of Democracy and Patriotic art competitions, thus encouraging more students to aim for a university education as they will have a means to pay for it.

Not only will she skate senior ladies in both the Ladies free skate and short programs, July 31st and August 1st, she was also selected to carry our state flag in sash and crown in the opening ceremony with Olympians Lolo Jones and Jordan Burroughs.
