Sacred Heart soccer outlasts Hopkins School, 5-4

The Convent of the Sacred Heart soccer team kept the good times rolling Wednesday afternoon, as they traveled to New Haven and came away with the 5-4 victory over Hopkins School.

With the score knotted at 4-4 late in the second half, junior Alessandra Nocco stepped up in a big way. On a through ball from the right side that split two Hopkins’ defenders, Nocco got a foot on the ball and blasted it past Hopkins freshman goalie Jessica D’Errico for the 5-4 lead in the 81st minute.

Scoring came fast and furious to start the game. In the 10th minute, the Tigers got on the board when freshman Erin Cleary got the ball on the right side of the box and blasted her shot past the Hopkins’ goalie for the 1-0 lead.

Only two minutes later, Sacred Heart struck again. Junior Tracey Hagan latched onto a through ball and was 1-on-1 with the keeper to make the score 2-0.

Although Hopkins answered a minute later, Sacred Heart added to its lead in the 38th minute, when Hagan stole a back pass to the keeper and beat her 1-on-1 for the 3-1 lead.

Hopkins added its second goal to start the second half, however Sacred Heart was able to keep the two-goal lead in the 74th minute when Hagan beat her defender on a through ball for the 4-2 lead.

The end of the game was a little nerve-racking for the Tigers, as Hopkins score in the 77th and 79th minute to tie the game.

In net, Sacred Heart was paced by sophomore Charlie Clark, who finished with four saves. Not to be outdone was Hopkins’ D’errico, as she tallied eight saves. The Tigers also outshot Hopkins 15-9.
