Recently North Mianus students ate 5-A-Day the Rainbow Way during the school’s annual Fruit & Veggie Challenge.

During each day of the week-long challenge, during lunch time, the children had the opportunity to sample small pieces of various fruits and vegetables and to learn about their properties and benefits. The main goal was to make the kids aware of the importance of a colorful and healthy plate.

The theme of the challenge was Eat 5-A-Day the Rainbow Way, because the children sampled a different color of fruit and vegetable each day. Kids logged their fruit & veggie intake at home, and a special prize was awarded to the class with the highest participation.

The school said it had to thank major event sponsor Stop & Shop and local markets Fairway and A&P Fresh for helping to make it possible to serve fresh peppers, mangoes, watermelon, star fruit and more during lunch in the cafeteria.
