Westfair Singers: Celebrating ‘Gifts Most Rare’

The Westfair Singers, a women’s choral ensemble under the musical direction of Mary Jane Newman, will present a holiday concert Gifts Most Rare: Celebrate! on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m., at the Second Congregational Church in Greenwich.

The concert will feature music from Mozart, Palestrina, Rutter and Anthony Newman, as well as a selection of carols from around the world. Trumpeter David Glukh and pianist Andrew Gordon will also appear in the program.

Ms. Newman is a renowned conductor, harpsichordist, organist and recording artist throughout the U.S. and Europe.

She made her New York debut in 1986 in Lincoln Center’s Great Performers series at Alice Tully Hall and has been a soloist with the Cracow Chamber Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, the Virginia Symphony and a conductor of Musica Antiqua New York, the Brandenburg Collegium and at the prestigious Mozart Festival in Prague.

Mr. Newman, who has been described by Wynton Marsalis as “the high priest of Bach” and by Time Magazine as “the high priest of the harpsichord,” has maintained a 41-year career and is considered America’s leading organist, harpsichordist and Bach specialist with a recording output of more than 170 CDs. As a keyboard artist, he has performed more than 60 times at Lincoln Center and has also conducted major chamber and symphonic orchestras around the world.

Mr. Glukh has performed on live television and radio broadcasts including NPR, WQXR 96.3, and Kol Ha Musica (an Israeli classical music radio station). As a soloist, Mr. Glukh has appeared with the Louisville Orchestra, Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, Jupiter Symphony, Raanana Symphoniette, IDF Orchestra, Ulianovsk Symphony Orchestra and Ensemble Melodia.

Mr. Gordon is the principal keyboardist of the Greenwich Symphony and appears regularly with the symphony’s Chamber Players. In 2011, he was a featured soloist with the Greenwich Symphony in Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #5.
