Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival slated

yoshino_cherry_grove_trump_The Mill River Collaborative and the Japan Society of Fairfield County host the 2015 Stamford Sakura Matsuri (Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival) on Saturday, May 9, from 11-4, at Mill River Park in Stamford.

The event includes live musical and dance performances, demonstrations, craft activities for adults and children, and Japanese food vendors.

Cherry Blossom Viewing (Sakura Matsuri) dates back to a centuries old tradition of Japanese flower viewing (Hanami). Today picnics, parties and festivals are held throughout Japan corresponding to when the cherry trees are expected to blossom. In 1912, this was popularized in the US when Tokyo Mayor Ukio Ozaki gifted the city of Washington 2000 cherry trees to be planted along the Potomac River. The brief period of when the flowers bloom and petals fall cautions us to the frailty of human existence and life’s impermanence. This allegory provides a strong reminder that life is fleeting and that we should appreciate each moment.

In addition there will be Japanese food and craft vendors).
