New weekly newspaper coming to Greenwich

newspaperAccording to now-former staffers at Hersam Acorn Newspapers, owners of and 18 other newspapers, news sites, radio and live video streaming channels in Fairfield County and Westchester County, N.Y.,  a new weekly newspaper is preparing to debut in Greenwich in May. The name of the paper and the actual start date remain unclear at this time.

Paul Silverfarb, Greenwich sports editor and Caroll Melgar, content coordinator for Hersam Acorn both resigned this week to take positions at the new weekly paper.

Hersam Acorn ended the print edition of the Greenwich Post in January.

The owner or publisher behind the new publication is is Tegan Baker, according to sources. She filed “Greenwich Ledger, LLC” on March 30, 2015. The LLC is registered at 1 River Road in Cos Cob.

Calls to that address went unanswered today.

“Paul and Caroll were both long time and valued members of our team and I wish them well in their new positions,” said Martin V. Hersam, chief executive officer, of Hersam Acorn. “I suspect the new owners of this newspaper, whoever they are, have studied the financial complexities of operating a weekly newspaper as a solo enterprise. It appears these folks believe they have a model for success for a legacy media bid despite very compelling industry evidence that such an effort will likely result in several years of heavy financial losses in order to  reach a break even point. These are challenging times for the legacy and traditional digital components of of our industry. We still play a very vital role in the communities we serve. However, the the end user of the local content we create dictates that we offer it via an ever evolving menu of platforms.”
