After two periods, Greenwich hockey trails Darien 1-0 in D1 final

The Darien Blue Wave has taken a 1-0 lead over the Greenwich Cardinals on a goal by Jack Pardue as the CIAC Div. I boys ice hockey final at Yale’s Ingalls Rink.

After a scoreless and even first period, Pardue finally broke the ice when he netted an unassisted goal at the 5:36 mark of the second. Pardue settled the puck in the zone, squared his body and then fired a shot high over goalie Bryan Archino’s shoulder.

Greenwich outshot the Wave, 8-5, in the second period, and has a 17-15 edge overall, but Darien goalie Will Massie has had a blistering game so far.

Massie has made 17 saves, many at close range during the second period.

Greenwich nearly tied the game during a scrum involving Matt Lodato, Montana Larson and Brian Silard with five minutes to play in the second, but Massie and the Wave defense protected the net.

The Cardinals had another good chance with 4:15 to play, but again the puck was kept from the net.

Kristian Cunningham had a great chance during a rush with under 30 seconds to play, but his shot to the far post was stopped on a beautiful glove save by Massie.
