Day one of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference wrestling championships is in the books and Greenwich High School has a plethora of athletes ready to shine starting Saturday morning.

In the 113-pound weight class, Brandon Aguda is in the hunt for the FCIAC championship. After getting a bye in the opening round, the No. 3 seeded Aguda took care of Brien McMahon’s No. 6 seeded Nico Gonzalez with a pinfall 56 seconds into the match.

Saturday morning Aguda will take to the mat in the FCIAC semifinal match against second-seeded Austin Sherman of Fairfield Ludlowe.

Ethan Ross will also wrestle in Saturday’s FCIAC semifinal match in the 152-pound weight class. On Friday, Ross, seeded third, started the day by taking care of 14th seed Ryan Mahoey of Staples with a pinfall 1:00 into the match. He kept the good times rolling against sixth-seeded Alec Shilstone, as Ross picked up the 8-6 victory to advance to Saturday’s semis. There he will grapple second-seeded Adam Angelucci of Trumbull.

Another GHS wrestler that moved on to Saturday’s FCIAC semifinal round was Erik Menchaca in the 220-pound weight class. Menchaca, seeded third, started his FCIAC tourney with a pinfall victory 58 seconds into his match with Norwalk’s Zach Zalman. Menchaca stayed strong against New Canaan’s Ryan Russo, as he scored the pinfall victory against his No. 6 seeded opponent 4:18 into the match.

Up next for Menchaca will be a match against Fairfield Warde’s second-seeded John Ocana in the FCIAC semis Saturday morning.

One weight class up will be another GHS grappler competing in the FCIAC semis, as Chris Fischer, seeded third, moved on. He started Friday’s opening round with a bye and then finished off Stamford’s Greg Bortot with a pin 43 seconds into the match. Up next for Fischer will be a match Saturday morning against No. 2 seeded Michael Gaboardi of Danbury.
