Greenwich wrestling team finishes off Ridgefield 41-24

The Greenwich High School wrestling team found itself in a hole early against Ridgefield High School, but was able to end strong and finish with a 41-24 victory over the Tigers yesterday afternoon.

A 7-2 decision for Brandon Aguda in the 113-pound weight class by beating Byron Sleight and a pinfall victory by Greenwich’s Mickey Russell at 120 against Peter Murray helped give the Cards the early lead. However RHS came storming back by netting a decision victory at the 126-pound weight class and back-to-back pinfall victories that took less than a minute in the 132- and 138-pound weight classes respectively.

Although trailing, the Cardinals dominated the rest of the way, winning all but one match. At 145, Bryce Stanback upended Dylan Chelednik 10-6, while Mike Ceci won the 152-pound weight class with a 5-3 victory over Alec Shilstone. Ethan Ross kept the good times rolling in the 160-pound weight class by beating Tyler Hamilton 9-4.

Greenwich’s Mark Nielson came out strong in the 170-pound weight class and beat Daniel Sawtelle via pinfall 1:08 into the match. Ridgefield’s Kyle McCormick was victorious in the 182-pound weight class, but the trio of Joe Carriero (195), Erik Menchaca (220) and Chris Fischer (285) rounded out the day for Big Red and iced the victory by all receiving forfeit victories.

With the win, Greenwich upped it record to 9-2 on the season and will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Ridgefield and compete in the Ridgefield Challenge.
