Greenwich wrestling upended by powerful Hatters, 55-18

The Greenwich High School wrestling team faced some tough competition against perennial powers Danbury High School and were defeated 55-18.

Despite the loss, Big Red picked up some key victories on the day. In the 113-pound weight class, Brandon Aguda finished off Danbury’s Aaron Occhipinit with a 5-3 decision.

Also picking up a decision victory was Alex Nanai in the 170-pound weight class, as he upended Gino Barratta 4-2.

Big Red’s lone pinfall victories on the day were in the 220- and 160-pound weight classes. At 220, Erik Menchaca quickly scored the victory 32 seconds into his match with Tony Barratta, while at 160, the Card’s Jack Freiheit pinned Andrew Marquis 2:34 into the match.

With the loss, Greenwich fell to 5-1 on the season and will be back in action Saturday when they travel up to Conard High School and battle Guilford, Middletown and Ledyard high schools.
