North Mianus students learn about colonial life

On Nov. 25, North Mianus Elementary school first graders experienced a day in the life of a colonial child.

Upon entering their “one room school house” the students began their day by making cornbread. Next a local cobbler, Mr. Izet of Izet’s Leather & Shoe Repair in Stamford shared and demonstrated his craft.

Following the demonstration, the students wrote in wooden hornbooks with quill pens and ink, learned how to weave, rolled beeswax candles, learned a colonial partner dance, played with wooden toys including hoops and sticks, Jacob’s Ladders, marbles and ball and cup toys.

The first grade teachers at North Mianus school believe that the best way for children to learn is through experience, and what an amazing experience they had living in colonial times for a day.
