Velasquez wins Tour de Greenwich XXVIII

Christian Velasquez of Greenwich won the Volvo of Stamford Tour de Greenwich XXVIII this past Sunday.

Velasquez, 30, won the 20-mile bicycle race with a time of 49 minutes, 15 seconds to nip New York’s Pascal Sauvayre by just one second. Velasquez’s winning time averaged out to a speed of 24.37 miles per hour over the course that began and ended at Greenwich High School.

After that first pair finished comfortably ahead of the rest of the field, there was a very tight pack of finishers, as the next 21 cyclists who finished in places 3-23 were all within 10 seconds of each other.

Billy Muzzio of Sandy Hook placed third, Watertown’s Kary Daley was fourth, John Interlandi of Newington took fifth, Boris Salazar of New Rochelle, N.Y., was sixth, and they all had a time of 50:37.

Roger Harper of New Canaan and Guy Poirier of Wilton were clocked in 50:38, while Carlos Quintero of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., and Norwalk’s Domoique Desmontis each had a 50:39 while rounding out the top 10.

Janet Burnstead, 30, of Stamford was the Open Women champion and she placed 105th overall with a 1:00:32. Cari Hills of New Canaan was the female runner-up and 112th overall with a 1:01:11.

There were 325 total finishers — 275 males and 50 females.

Andrew Craighead of Greenwich placed 12th overall, just ahead of fellow Greenwich resident Leon Lopez, and they were both timed in 50:40.

Velasquez, Craighead and Lopez were three of the 25 Greenwich residents who placed among the top 100.

The others included Cos Cob’s Matt Armstrong (17th, 50:43), Andrew Gillis (18th, 50:43), Morris Sachs (20th, 50:45), Riverside’s Jon Baxendale (22nd, 50:46), Cos Cob’s Stephan Hedbabny (23rd, 50:47), Esteban Fernandez (27th, 52:17), Chris Pollack (40th, 53:43), David Posner (42nd, 53:44), Adam Finkelstein (46th, 53:46), Old Greenwich’s Peter Kemp (52nd, 53:47), Jorge Hayler (60th, 54:09), Riverside’s Ed Keller (55:00), Thomas Thornton (56:45), Bruce Semer (74th, 56:47), Cos Cob’s David Colombe (78th, 56:50), Ed Scheetz (80th, 56:55), Nick Williams (85th, 58:17), Old Greenwich’s Serge Thompson (87th, 58:50), Robert Wilson (89th, 58:52), Old Greenwich’s Klas Holm (96th, 58:55), Cos Cob’s Jude Donato (98th, 59:02) and Brian Shipman (99th, 59:02).

This past Sunday’s bicycle race was the seventh event in the Volvo of Stamford Greenwich Cup series of 10 events. The final three events of the series are Susannah’s Run at 9 a.m. on Oct. 14, the Beachfront Bushwhack/Max’s Mile at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 11, and the Pathways Jingle Bell Jog at 9 a.m. on Dec. 9.
