Police Dog Tyro, with Officer Michael Macchia, paid a visit to the YMCA shortly before his retirement.

The YMCA of Greenwich hosted Greenwich Police K9 Unit Officer Mike Macchia and his police dog, Tyro at the Y’s after-school program on Dec. 12.

Tyro, a German Shepherd, who recently retired following nine years of service alongside Officer Macchia. The kindergarten through fifth grade students, described as “excited and inquisitive” by Y observers, learned about K9 training and service as well as the increasing importance of personal responsibility and gun safety. Tyro recently celebrated his well-earned retirement by becoming part of Officer Macchia’s famiy.

The YMCA of Greenwich After School Program at St. Roch Avenue offers a variety of activities for children. With transportation provided from Hamilton Ave, Julian Curtis, North Street and Glenville Schools, the program offers a combination of free-choice and structured activities. The curriculum includes: homework help, arts and crafts, science, sports and character development.
