YWCA honors Martin Luther King Jr. on Thursday

The YWCA Greenwich’s 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration is set for this Thursday, Jan. 15.

The celebration will feature Yale University Assistant Professor Christopher Lebron, Ph.D., Department of African-America Studies, Greenwich High School senior Alexander Ng and Brunswick School senior Irenee (Sam) May

“We are pleased to be able to spotlight someone of Professor Lebron’s credentials at this very important event and to honor Alexandra and Sam for their efforts to eliminate racism…one of the core missions of the YWCA,” YWCA President and CEO Adrianne Singer said.

This is a free community-wide event and it will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the YWCA, 259 East Putnam Avenue. The program will consist of an introduction by Ms. Singer, an address by Dr. Lebron entitled Injustice and Revisiting the Idea of Resistance, the awarding of a YWCA Racial Justice Scholarship to Alexandra Ng of Greenwich High School and Sam May of the Brunswick School, introductions of and remarks by First Selectman Peter Tesei and other dignitaries. Senator Richard Blumenthal and Congressman Jim Himes have been invited.

Refreshments will be served thanks to Whole Foods, Greenwich, DiMare Pastry Shop and Costco, Port Chester.

Dr. Lebron received his PhD from the MIT in 2009. His book, The Color of our Shame: Race and Justice in Our Time, was published by the Oxford University Press in 2013, was awarded First Book Prize by the American Political Science Association in 2014.
