Greenwich wrestling takes third at Greater Hartford Open

The Greenwich High School wrestling team had a stellar outing during last weekend’s Greater Hartford Open, finishing third out of 11 teams at the prestigious event.

BigRed finished with 142.5 points and beat out Foran High School, as the 11th ranked team in the state netted 128.0 points. Overall it was Newtown High School that grabbed the gold, taking 296.5 points. New Milford High School finished second with 184.5 points.

Overall, the Cardinals finished with six top three grapplers on the day. In the 120-pound weight class, Brian Harvey took second place, going 2-1 on the day and lost to Foran’s Ryan Luth in the finals. Also going 2-1 and advancing to the championship match was Michael Ceci in the 138-pound weight class.

In the 220-pound weight class, Erik Menchaca finished 2-1 on the day and fell to Ogadi Ikani of Hall High School in the championship match.

The trio of Brandon Aguda, Ethan Ross and Jack Freiheit all finished 3-1 on the day and came away with the bronze medal in their respective weight class. Aguda (113) won his final match against Newington’s Tyler Savluk in a 7-1 decision. Not to ne outdone was Ross in the 145-pound weight class, as he won with a 9-7 decision over New Milford’s Caleb Anderson.

Freiheit (160) took care of New Milford’s John Ceconi in the consolation finals 6-5 to cap off his day.
