Greenwich Recreation to host Hot shots basketball contest

The Greenwich Department of Parks and Recreation announces a Hot Shots basketball competition on Thursday, Feb. 5 at the Central Middle School gym.

The competition starts at 6:30 p.m. and is open to boys and girls aged nine to 15 as of Dec. 31, 2014.

There are three age categories, nine- to 10-year-olds, 11- to 12-years-old and 13- to 15-years-old, with separate divisions for boys and girls. The younger age categories will compete at the earlier times.

The Hot Shot competition is co-sponsored by the Connecticut Recreation and Parks Association. The winners in each category will advance to the state meet in Stratford on Saturday, March 28.

Hot Shots is a basketball skills contest that required running, ball control, shooting ability and strategy. It is designed to promote enthusiasm, fun, physical fitness and sportsmanship. Each player will receive three timed rounds of one minute each to run and dribble, as well as to shoot from hot spots marked in various locations on the gym floor.

Points are awarded for shots made and also for attempting shots on all of the hot spots. More instructions will be given at the event.

Registration is open by mail to Greenwich Recreation Division, 101 Field Point Road, Greenwich, Conn., 06836-2540 or may be done in person at the Recreation Division Office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Thursday, Jan. 29.

Forms are available on Greenwichct.org. Click on Government and then click on Parks and Recreation.

Advance registration is strongly recommended as space is limited in each category. There will be registration available at the gym if space is available. The fee is $5 for registration before Jan. 29 and $10 at the gym. Medals will be presented to the winners in the various divisions.
