Arthur Murray Ballroom wins Top Studio at NorthStar Dance-O-Rama

Christine Georgopulo knew she had an amazing staff and students at the Arthur Murray Grande Ballroom of Greenwich. Now she has the hardware to prove it.

Champion instructors Kelly Butler and Tom Varian traveled with Greenwich residents and students Jean O’Hare and Ran Holladay to Chicago for the NorthStar Dance-O-Rama competing against 25 other Arthur Murray Dance Centers from around the world and were honored by winning Top Studio.

Arthur Murray Dance Centers turns 103 in January with 280 schools around the world teaching 44 partner dances through the Medalist System; much like the Olympics, students compete for bronze, silver and gold Medals and are judged on knowledge of the Syllabus, technique and timing of their chosen dance and level — of course seeing the students enjoying themselves and knowing that they feel the music and the dance is an important factor as well. Jean and Ran have only been dancing a year, but are already excelling in both social and competitive dancing.

Arthur Murray Grande Ballroom of Greenwich has also won Best Small Business Award from the Chamber of Commerce, along with multiple awards for marketing and for the interior of the Regency Period Ballroom.

“We specialize in working with people who have never danced before,” Ms. Georgopulo said. “so many people have told us how their bodies and lives have changed for the better since dancing with us. The benefits of dance are endless, our motto is, ‘ask not if you can dance, ask what dance can do for you.’”

The studio donates dance programs to all charity events, provides complimentary dance classes for Greenwich Hospital Cancer patients and their support systems, works with Kids in Crisis, Boys & Girls Club, Stand Up 2 Cancer and the list goes on. On Dec. 6 and 7, Arthur Murray Ballroom is sponsoring the carriage ride up and down Greenwich Avenue during the 6th annual Holiday Stroll.

Additionally, Ms. Georgopulo shared that the studio has started a new rewards program for dancers inside and outside the studio. Non-students who download and share the app, Amgreenwich.com on Facebook or Twitter are rewarded with a free 30-minute introductory private lesson. Existing students can download the app and use it as a punchcard; after taking 12 group classes in one month, they receive a free master group class from one of the Arthur Murray World Champion traveling coaches.
