Greenwich wrestling preps for Shoreline Invitational with three big wins

On Saturday, the Greenwich High School wrestling team will have some tough competition at New Rochelle’s Shoreline Invitational.

Tuesday afternoon, Big Red geared up for one of its biggest invitationals of the year by taking care of three FCIAC foes, beating Brien McMahon 56-12, Wilton 69-9 and Central 82-0.

Nobody on the day was better than Erik Menchaca at the 220-pound weight class. Against McMahon’s Chase Stumpf, Menchaca came away with the 7-1 decision. His next two victories were via pinfall, as he took care of Wilton’s James Arbisi 47 seconds into the match. It took awhile, but Menchaca scored the pin against Central’s Deshaunte Longley at the 4:36 mark.

At the 152-pound weight class, Ethan Ross scored three victories. Although he won via forfeit against Central, Ross pinned McMahon’s Nicholas Marsan at the 1:35 mark and again scored the pin against Wilton’s Harry Winrow at the 2:28 mark.

Also scoring three victories, two of which were via pinfall, was heavyweight Chris Fischer. Against Central’s Raheem Lynch, Fischer took care of business with a pinfall 34 seconds into the match. It took Fischer one more second for the pinfall against McMahon’s Allen Hersey and scored a victory against the Warriors with a forfeit.

Not to be outdone was Artem Morozov at the 195-pound weight class. After getting a forfeit victory against Central, he pinned the Warrior’s Martynas Zoruba 22 seconds into his match. Morozov rounded out his day with a pinfall victory against McMahon’s Marcus Garcia at the 1:20 mark of the match.

Thomas Williams was also perfect on the day, finishing 3-0. He took care of Wilton’s Ethan Helman with a pin 57 seconds into the match. Against the Senators’ Jeff Cappone, Williams was also victorious via a pinfall 2:35 into the match. The third victory was against Central via forfeit.

With the victories, Greenwich upped its record to 4-0 on the season and will be back in action Saturday when they compete at the Shoreline Invitational.
