Welcome back, Brunswick

Though the temperature outdoors was in the 80’s, Opening Day at Brunswick School punctuated the end of summer as the doors were opened for the school’s 100th academic year.

As is Brunswick tradition, seniors showed leadership, mentorship and friendship when they walked hand-in-hand with first graders into Dann Gymnasium on the King Street campus for the first day. More than 1,000 students, faculty and staff were gathered for this auspicious dawn of a new school year.

In his opening remarks, Headmaster Thomas W. Philip reminded students that besides academics, athletics and the arts, Brunswick School is about much more.

“What we care most about at Brunswick is Courage, Honor, Truth,” he said, referencing Brunswick School’s motto. “Speak the truth and expect others to do the same. Do the right thing always. Strong character means being honest when the stakes are high, and it is how you conduct yourself when no one is looking. Essentially, there is no greater ambition than to be a person of honor.

“We are all part of something greater than ourselves,” Mr. Philip added. “Be responsible to yourself, to Brunswick, your family, friends and community, and remember always your commitment to Courage, Honor, Truth. Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year.”
