Greenwich High School named as AVID highly certified site

Greenwich High School has been recognized by AVID as an “AVID Highly Certified Site” for the 2014-15 school year.

According AVID’s chief executive officer, Sandy Husk, Ph.D., “This status is awarded to AVID sites that have demonstrated exceptional implementation fidelity of the AVID Program Essentials and Data Collection documentation that supports the program effectiveness and student progress.”

Dr. Husk continued, “We applaud you for your diligence in attaining this achievement, and we look forward to your continued leadership in providing quality results for students through AVID implementation.”

The self-study and validation process requires AVID sites to submit documentation to substantiate achieving desired benchmarks. Highlights of the GHS AVID program include 100% of students and staff involved with AVID at GHS volunteer to participate in the program. Each year all of AVID students’ schedules reflect enrollment in an increasingly more rigorous sequence of courses, appropriate to the student, which will enable them to fulfill the sequence of four-year college or university entrance requirements.

AVID exists in all grades and has expanded to two 9th grade sections. In the 2013-14 school year, all of AVID seniors applied and were accepted to college. Also last school year, $1.5 million in scholarships and grants was awarded to the AVID senior class. All of AVID juniors and seniors participated in the SAT and/or ACT. An additional 20 faculty members beyond those directly involved with the AVID elective have been trained in AVID methodologies as Greenwich High School moves the AVID program components school wide.

GHS Headmaster Chris Winters said, “Strong district and school leadership, especially the dedication of GHS AVID Site Coordinator Mara Adelsberg and all our AVID teachers, has led to a designation for which the entire GHS community is extremely proud. The ‘Highly Certified’ AVID program at GHS provides students who might otherwise struggle the opportunity and skills needed to succeed. We are thankful to the Greenwich Alliance for Education’s on-going support and to our AVID students who have worked diligently to make this honor possible.”
