Saturday’s downpour did nothing to dampen the spirits of more than 300 community members as the Friends of the Byram Shubert Library welcomed all to the annual tree lighting. That special visitor from the North Pole arrived in a Byram fire truck and stayed for photographs. Library Branch Manager Miguel Garcia-Colon was on hand to greet everyone, looking festive in his Santa Claus hat.

Holiday songs filled the air as everyone followed along to the music provided by Bob Leinbach on the keyboard. Holiday food was brought by many of the guests, reflecting the traditions of their native lands. Jerk chicken from Jamaica was joined by pilaf from India, New England clam chowder and that Hanukah favorite, potato pancakes with applesauce. Cookies, cakes and Christmas-colored Jell-O provided a sweet end to the evening.

Mary-Ann Zalman, co-chair of the Friends board, said, “Despite the frightful weather, it was wonderful to have so many community members gather together to celebrate the holidays with music, laughter, holiday food, and, of course, with Santa.”
