Greenwich wrestling blasts Stamford to open season, wins 69-6

The Greenwich High School wrestling season kicked off its season in grand fashion Wednesday afternoon by blitzing Stamford High School, 69-6.

In total, six Cardinals won via pinfall, while four more claimed victory in a decision.

For Greenwich, Jack Freiheit started the match at the 160-pound weight class, upending Jeremy Frias at the 1:12 mark. Not to be outdone was Mitchell Nethercott at 170, as he pinned Andriy Mereshchak 54 seconds into the match. Greenwich’s Thomas Williams had the same fate as Nethercott, pinning his opponent Jonathan Spanakos in the 195-pound weight class 54 seconds into the match.

Big Red heavyweight Chris Fischer did one better, as he took care of Stamford’s Greg Borot with a pinfall 51 seconds into his match. In the 132-pound weight class, Wyndsor Doyle was victorious via a pinfall over Stamford’s Jeremy Czamanski with 17 seconds to play in the first period.

Rounding out the pins for Greenwich was Bryce Stanback, as he finished off Julius Page at the 3:16 mark of the 145-pound division match.

Competing in the 120-pound weight class, Greenwich’s Brandon Aguda scored the 14-3 victory over Stamford’s Garey Mendez, while Big Red’s Brian Harvey picked up the 9-4 victory over Omar Najarro in the 126-pound division. At 138, Mike Ceci easily took care of Stamford’s Nicolas Lycente 16-1 and scored the technical fall.

In a hard-fought match, Ethan Ross picked up some points for Greenwich in the 152-pound weight class by beating Stamford’s Kevin Thomas 5-2.

The trio of Artem Morozov (182), Erik Menchaca (220) and Dylan Ehert (106) all picked up forfeit victories.

Stamford lone victory came in the 113-pound weight class, as Jose Najarro upended Big Red’s Kyle Caruso with a pinfall victory at the 1:23 mark of the match.

With the victory, Greenwich improved to 1-0 on the season and will be back in action Saturday when they compete in the Shelton Invitational.
