A series of home burglaries took place over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and the Greenwich Police Department is working to raise awareness.

Four burglaries and one attempt were reported to police, with a total of eight recorded in the last month. Police believe that the robberies were committed by an organized group targetting unoccupied homes. In one case the victim was home during the break in, but the suspects fled after realizing there was someone in the house.

Portable, high-value items are prime targets for thieves, as they can be removed easily without a great disturbance.

In an effort to locate suspects and prevent further break-ins, the police department has increased uniformed and plain clothes patrols. The burglars in question broke into homes by force through doors and windows, but were also able to gain access to at least one home through an unlocked door.

The department is also offering some tips for burglary prevention. Prior to leaving your home unoccupied for an extended period of time, contact the police at 203-622-8002 to have your home added to the dark house list. Officers patrolling the neighborhood will be made aware of your absence and periodically check on the property.

They also recommend installing alarms or surveillance equipment to monitor the home, and creating an inventory of valuables kept inside. In the event that an intruder enters your home, police ask that you not attempt to confront them. Instead, dial 911 from a secure location.

Police ask that residents remain vigilant and report any kind of suspicious activity to their investigative tip lines at 203-622-3333 and 1-800-372-1176 or email [email protected]
