Gateway Orchestra looks to dazzle

The town will get a taste of symphonic masterpieces Sept. 14 when the Gateway Classical Music Society presents the acclaimed 60-piece Gateway Orchestra, which will perform symphonies by Beethoven, Brahms and Dvorak at the First Congregational Church of Greenwich.

With the help of this concert, the orchestra is spearheading an effort to reach out to a larger audience though Ambassadors for Masterworks, a patron ticket program that will allow it to provide a free repeat performance of a recent concert in a disadvantaged city or suburban neighborhood when enough patron tickets are sold.

The program, under the baton of conductor and music director Ida Angland, includes Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, Op. 84, the Brahms Violin Concerto in D Major, Op 77, featuring award winning violinist Kinga Augustyn, and the Dvorak New World Symphony in E minor, Op. 95.

“I have been saddened to learn that many hard working Americans have no idea who Beethoven was and the legacy of great music he and other great composers gave to the world to all of us in all walks of life. The Ambassadors for Masterworks is a vehicle by which to help make this happen,” Ms. Angland said.

Now in its eighth season, Gateway’s Great Works of Art Up Close and Personal performances in Greenwich and other regional venues have been described as “thrilling,” “compelling” and “unforgettable” in several local publications. Each “Ambassador” ticket, sold at $60, $75, $100, $150, $200, $300, $500 and $6000 and above for underwriters, includes a tax deductible donation. Purchasers of those special tickets are invited to attend an informal reception following the performance. Regular tickets are available at $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and $15 for students.

Ambassador and regularly priced tickets may be purchased at Gatewayclassical.org or at the door beginning at 7 p.m.
