On the catwalk: Fashion Night Out takes over Greenwich Avenue

Fashion-CFor one night, Greenwich Avenue wasn’t just a bustling shopping district. It was a catwalk where models professional and amateur got to strut their stuff in the latest fashions.

For the second year in a row, the red carpet was rolled out along the Avenue for Fashion Night Out, a national event that has become a Greenwich success story. Sponsored by Saks Fifth Avenue in town, there was a runaway show featuring more than 50 models as part of an evening full of events last Thursday that included parties in stores along Greenwich Avenue.

It necessitated closing the street from Lewis and Elm Street for the red carpet fashion show to take place, but no one was complaining as the community turned out in force for the event. Geri Corrigan, director of marketing for Greenwich’s Saks Fifth Avenue, told the Post that they had double the turnout they had for last year.

She said she was very pleased to have businesses like Miller Motorcars and dancers from the Arthur Murray Studios in town because it showed fashion’s value went beyond Greenwich Avenue’s clothing stores and boutiques.

“When it comes to style, it’s not just about clothes,” Ms. Corrigan said.

First Selectman Peter Tesei served as honorary chairman of the event and he said at last week’s Board of Selectmen meeting how he thought it benefited the town by supporting local businesses strengthening what he calls “the Greenwich brand.”

“The Greenwich brand prides itself on striving for excellence and for perfection in many ways and these folks certainly exhibit that in their celebration,” Mr. Tesei said.

Ms. Corrigan said that she fully expects Fashion Night Out to return next year based on how the community has embraced it.

“People really look forward to it and that’s great,” Ms. Corrigan said. “Fashion should always be a part of Greenwich and we had wonderful people from the community walking down the red carpet. It was a lot of fun for everyone involved.”
