Greenwich High girls swim team takes silver at CIAC Open finals

After dominating the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference class LL championship meet, the Greenwich High School girls swim team took to the pool at Yale University Saturday night for competition in the CIAC State Open championship.

The Lady Cardinals finished the event second overall, grabbing 406 points on the night.

For the third consecutive season, the Darien High School swim team took the Open championship with 510 points. While the Cardinals took the silver, it was a close one that came down to the last event. However the Rams took the bronze with 404 points.

In a distant fourth was Cheshire High School with 284 points and Pomperaug rounded out the top five with 281.5 points.

Big Red had two finishers place in the top 10 during the 200-yard individual medley. Junior Brooke Collins finished the event fourth overall, netting a time of 2:06.93. Freshman Kelly Montesi took home eighth overall, touching the wall with a time of 2:09.43.

In addition, Montesi also finished sixth overall in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.18 seconds.

Freshman Sophia Jahan fared well in the 200-yard freestyle event, placing eighth overall with a time of 1:55.90. Not to be denied was senior Patricia Kohn, as she finished 12th overall with 1:57.08.

Jahan also competed in the 500-yard freestyle, posting a time of 5:12.97 and that was good enough for ninth place. In 12th overall was junior Sarah Bellamy, as she touched the wall 12th with a time of 5:14.93. Ballamy also competed in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:57.56.

Senior captain Isobel Walker also had a top five finish. In the 100-yard backstroke, Walker took home fifth place overall and netted a time of 59.06. Competing in the 50-yard freestyle, Walker touched the wall 11th overall with a time of 24.68.

In addition to her fourth place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, Collins competed in the 100-yard breaststroke and grabbed a ninth place time of 1:06.63. Also competing in the event was junior Riley Ennis, as she finished 14th overall with a time of 1:07.75.

Greenwich had four swimmers score points in the 50-yard freestyle. In addition to Walker, freshman Ainsleigh Winget took 16th with a time of 25.04. Not far away from senior Porter Carlson, as she grabbed 19th and a time of 25.25. In 23rd was freshman Julia Merrill, as she touched the wall with a time of 25.62.

Merrill also participated in the 100-yard freestyle and finished with a time of 55.54.

All three Greenwich relay teams had top 10 finishes at Opens. In the 200-yard medley relay, the foursome of Walker, Collins, Montesi and freshman Taylor Schinto grabbed fifth overall with a time of 1:49.65. Greenwich finished eighth overall in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as Winget, Merrill, Carlson and Jahan touched the wall with a time of 1:40.63.

In the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Merrill, Winget, Montesi and Jahan finished sixth overall with a time of 3:38.17.
