Susan Rotholz and pianist Andrew Gordon will play the Flute Sonata, Op.77 by Joseph Jongen, and Ms. Rotholz will join the Chamber Player’s strings to perform Nocturne and Scherzo for Flute and String Quartet, by Arthur Foote during concerts on Sunday, Nov. 9 and Monday, Nov. 10.

Asked for her take on this concert, Ms. Rotholz gave some insights into how she thinks about the music and her role in a particular performance.

“Andrew loves Jongen’s music and suggested we perform this work. I had never played it before, and learning the piece with him has been a pleasure,” she said. “Andrew’s playing brings out the composer’s lush expression, vivid contrasts, rhythmic vitality and melodious arcs .This piece is a wonderful journey, and I am really looking forward to introducing it to the audience.”

Of Nocturne and Scherzo for Flute and String Quartet by Arthur Foote, Ms. Rotholz comments, “For me, as a flutist, playing with strings is a totally different experience than playing with piano. The pull and push of the bow relates directly to the air that spins the sound of the flute. The mood, color and atmosphere of the Foote piece make a wonderful pairing with the Jongen work.”

Principal flutist of both the Greenwich Symphony and the New York Chamber Ensemble, Ms. Rotholz is a member of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, The New York Pops and The Little Orchestra Society and has toured extensively with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. She was principal flute for the New England Bach Festival for 25 years. She currently teaches at Columbia University, CUNY and the Manhattan School of Music.

Franz Schubert’s Notturno for Piano Trio in E-flat major, Op.148, and Serge Prokofiev’s String Quartet No. 1 in B minor, Op.50 are also programmed.

The concerts are on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. at the Round Hill Community Church and Monday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bruce Museum. Tickets are $30 adults, $5 students and are available at the door. Audiences are invited to a wine and cheese reception at each concert.
