Yachting history discussed Sept. 13

Greenwich has a long tradition of sailing and anyone who wants to learn more is invited to a special presentation next Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Indian Harbor Yacht Club.

The Greenwich Historical Society will present Secrets of the Red Book: The Illustrious History of Greenwich’s Early Yachting Community at the club starting at 6:30 p.m.

When Sheila Graves began to explore the history of Indian Harbor Yacht Club, little did she know that old club handbooks listing the names of former members, which are more commonly known as “red books,” would lead to so many fascinating tales involving prominent Greenwich citizens.

In today’s world, business deals might get sealed on the golf course, but at the turn of the last century it was the fierce competition of yacht racing that drew Greenwich magnates together. And she discovered that the hub of this friendly competition was Indian Harbor Yacht Club, founded in 1889, rebuilt in 1919 and currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

To celebrate Indian Harbor Yacht Club’s Third Classic Yacht Regatta, the Greenwich Historical Society will present Indian Harbor Yacht Club historians Sheila and Ted Graves along with Chris Fey in a lecture about the club’s early history and some of its notable members. Attendees will be able to learn about legendary yachting rivalries, the reason for the clubhouse’s distinctive Mediterranean-style architecture and more.

After the program, guests are welcome to stroll the docks to see some of the classic boats participating in the regatta.

The doors open at 6 p.m. with the lecture starting at 6:30.

Tickets for Historical Society and yacht club Members are $20 and for non-members it’s $25.

The club is at 710 Steamboat Road. For reservations, visit Greenwichhistory.org or call 203-869-6899, ext. 10.
