Greenwich High Student: Violinist to inaugurate Youth Music Series

Round Hill Community Church has announced that violinist Mark Chien, a senior at Greenwich High School will be featured on Rally Day, Sunday, Sept. 9, as the first performer in the Youth Music Series which will present talented young instrumentalists from the Greenwich area throughout the year.

Mark will play the 2nd Movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, Canzonetta: Andante, as the prelude to the morning service.

He has already performed in some of the country’s most renowned concert halls and festivals including, Lincoln Center’s David Koch Theatre, Alice Tully Hall, Symphony Space and Carnegie Hall. Mark has traveled to Salzburg, Austria to participate in the University of Mozarteum Summer International Academy and both this past summer and in 2011, he participated in the Bowdoin International Music Festival.

Mark began learning the violin at age six with Spring Berv and at age 10, continued his studies with Lewis Kaplan of the Juilliard School. At the Bowdoin International Music Festival, Mark studied with Ayano Ninomiya, the first violinist of the Ying Quartet, Frank Huang, the concertmaster of the Houston Symphony, and Lewis Kaplan and was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2006 Connecticut International Young Artist Violin Competition.

He was featured as a soloist with the Greenwich Symphony at age 13 and has attended the Mannes College of Music for four years in the pre-college division.

He is currently in his third year as a member of the award winning New York Youth Symphony and plans on continuing his violin studies through college.

The Rally Day prelude starts at 9:45 a.m. and the service is at 10.
