All the hard work that Greenwich High School put into the fall athletic season will be on display starting today, as several programs will start competition in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournaments.

After the Greenwich High School boys and girls cross-country teams got the ball rolling Monday afternoon, competing in the FCIAC championship meet at Waveny Park, the GHS boys soccer team will start later today at Cardinal Stadium.

Today at 3:45 p.m., the Greenwich High School boys soccer team will be hosting Westhill High School in the opening round of the FCIAC tournament. The Cardinals, seeded third in the FCIAC tourney, enter the game with an 11-3-2 record, while the Vikings are seeded sixth and have a 9-4-3 mark in the conference.

The last time these two teams played was on Sept. 27 and Big Red came away with the convincing 4-0 victory. In that game, Nick Bartels, Liam Tracey, John Aguirre and Bernardo Franca each added a goal.

Three other FCIAC boys soccer games will be going on today as well. No. 8 seeded Wilton High School will travel to Fairfield for a game against Fairfield Ludlowe High School. The Falcons are the top-seeded team in FCIACs, posting a record of 13-0-3. Seventh-seeded Staples High School will be on the road against No. 2 seeded Danbury High School, while No. 5 seeded Darien High School will make the short drive to Norwalk and battle the No. 4 seeded Bears.

The FCIAC semifinals will be played at Fairfield Ludlowe High School Monday night, with the championship game at Norwalk High School Wednesday at 7.

On Saturday it will be the Greenwich High School field hockey team to start its FCIAC tournament run. After a solid stretch in an attempt to qualify for the postseason, the Lady Cardinals are seeded eighth with an 6-4-3-0 conference mark and will travel to Wilton to battle No. 1 seed Wilton High School Saturday at 5 p.m.

Wilton enters the game with an 11-1-1-0 record. While the contest will be tough for Big Red, just remember that Wilton’s only loss in FCIACs this season was to Greenwich. In a game played Wednesday afternoon at a soggy WHS, Greenwich scored both its goals in the first half, as senior Sarah Stinebaugh and sophomore Paige Mautner each found the back of the net.

No. 7 seeded Westhill High School will travel to perennial powers Darien, who are seeded second in the conference. No. 6 Ridgefield High School will be on the road against third-seeded Staples High School, while No. 5 seeded Fairfield Warde High School will travel to Dunning Stadium for a game against New Canaan.

All games are slated for Saturday. The winners will travel to Brien McMahon High School for the FCIAC semifinals on Tuesday night.

While the seedings aren’t set quite yet, the Greenwich High School girls volleyball team will be attempt to defend its FCIAC championship. With a 12-5 FCIAC record, Big Red clinched a spot in next week’s FCIAC tournament. As of press time, the Lady Cardinals are seeded sixth. Darien High School is the overall top-seed, as they have a perfect 17-0 record.
