Greenwich Antiques Society lecture on Nov. 10

Jeffery Collins, professor and chair of academic programs at Bard Graduate center, will present his lecture From Italy to England: Furniture Designs by William Kent, at the Bruce Museum Monday, Nov. 10 at 1:15 p.m.

The lecture will examine how Mr. Kent (1685-1748) was adept at applying the lessons he learned from his ten year sojourn in Italy to the planning of English town and country houses, from the layout of their grounds to the arrangement of their interiors. Not the least of Kent’s skills was the design of household furniture, including elaborate mirrors and specimen marble tables for galleries and entrance halls, innovative forms for private libraries, and grandiose suites of seating for reception rooms.

Mr. Collins’s work at the Bard Graduate Center in New York City specializes in the art and visual culture of 17th- and 18th-century Europe and Latin America. Mr. Collins is the author of studies on 17th- through 21st-century painting, sculpture, architecture, urbanism, museology, book illustration, furniture and film.

There will be refreshments immediately after the lecture. Admission for non-members of the Greenwich Antiques Society is $20. Space is limited. Reservations required for members and guests by Nov. 3. For reservations and information: [email protected] or 203-322-2967.
