In coming weeks, students in Greenwich public and independent schools will participate in concerts by the Greenwich Symphony Orchestra, as part of its annual Young People’s Concert series.

This season’s first program, for second and third grades, will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 29 and will explore the music of the Baroque period. The students will learn about the musical technique and size of the orchestra, and the instrumentation that started it all. Some of the selections to be performed are Pachelbel’s Canon and music by Handel and Bach. Special guest Krystof Witek, Concertmaster of the Orchestra, will perform excerpts from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

On Nov. 5, a second program, to be attended by students in grades fourth and fifth, will feature music for important celebrations in history. The music for this program will include excerpts from Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March,” Handel’s “Water Music,” Sibelius’s “Finlandia,” Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” and Copland’s “Simple Gifts.”

A third program, titled “A Night at the Opera,” will be presented in April for students in grades sixth and seventh.

The Young People’s Concerts are designed and led by Tara Simoncic, Associate Conductor of the Orchestra, to introduce students in Greenwich schools to the symphony orchestra and the music of the great masters. Age-appropriate study materials for the works to be performed are provided to school music teachers for use in their classroom preparation for the concert.

The concerts are given, free of charge, during the school day to students in grades two through seven. This year, approximately six thousand students will attend one of the concerts. The series is made possible through contributions from parent-teacher associations, the Greenwich Board of Education, corporate donors, foundations, GSO fundraising events and individual contributions.

Due to the ongoing construction at the Greenwich High School, this year’s concerts will be held at the Central Middle School auditorium. Because of the smaller size of the substitute auditorium, seating for parents and members of the public will not be offered. For more information, call the symphony office at 203-869-2664.
