Youth hoops start

Ready to shoot some hoops?

The NBA season may be a few months away from tipping off, but the time is now for Greenwich youth interested in hitting the court for some fun. Two Greenwich area youth basketball leagues are set to play this year and games begin on Sept. 8 and 9. The Greenwich Stars Basketball Organization is sponsoring both leagues.

There is the Saturday league known as the Greenwich Stars Premier League. That has a 10-game season with playoffs and is for both boys and girls in town, from grades four to nine. This competitive league gets players ready for the winter season and the staff includes some of the top coaches in the area. Games are held mainly on Saturdays with practices and some games during the week. Game times are from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays. All games have certified referees and are held at Carmel Academy on 270 Lake Avenue.

The second league is focused on Sundays. The Backyard Sports Prep Basketball League has an eight-week season with playoffs and is also for boys and girls, grades four to nine. This competitive league includes a very popular 90 minute practice/clinic session every Sunday from 12 to 1:30 p.m. before every game on Sundays. There are also set to be four mid-week basketball clinics led by Coach Vin Minotti — The 2012 New York State Private High School Basketball Coach of the Year.

Games are on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 6 p.m. and all games have certified referees. They will be held at the SUNY Purchase Gym, Purchase, N.Y.
