Old Greenwich Sailboat Regatta casts off on Sunday

It’s time to set sail in Binney Pond, but please leave the yacht at home. The annual Old Greenwich Riverside Community Center Inc. (OGRCC) Sailboat Regatta is only for sailors of a far smaller scale.

The event, which is set for Sunday, Oct. 19, features homemade motorized boats, remote control boats and model sail boats being placed in competition. There will be several divisions racing during the regatta including several age groups for children and one for adults 18 and over. There will also be separate divisions for homemade boats, remote control ones and the model sail boats.

The festivities begin at 1 p.m. at Binney Park with the measuring in. Then there’s the skippers meeting at 1:50 and the races are set to begin setting sail at 2 p.m. lasting until 4. This family event promises a day of fun and has been an Old Greenwich tradition for more than 50 years. The event is open to people of all ages whether they’re seasoned sailboat enthusiasts or first time sailors.

The registration fee is $5 per family and you can register on the day of the event. More information is available online at Myogrcc.org.
